VIKING

Perched atop a wind swept, oceanfront site, this structure shares an intimate relationship with the forces of nature acting upon it.
A thin, plate steel roof extends weightlessly toward the sea, in an apparent response to the ocean breeze, while board formed concrete walls act contrapuntally to anchor the structure to the site.

The open plan, interior spatial configuration responds to the owner’s desire for flexibility and transformation, as the structure is principally a vacation home for family and friends. A second skin system of adjustable, electronically controlled exterior shutters facilitates the control of light and privacy. A two-story light well containing an amorphic, spiral staircase provides spatial continuity.
The interplay of light, materials and composition contribute to a sense of place rooted in the site.

The open plan of the interior spaces facilitates the transformation and flexibility required by the owners for communal activity or private reflection. This project demonstrates that on a difficult and complex site, it is possible to fulfill the rigorous requirements of the client while engaging in a spirited and robust dialogue with the site.
